Furniture Making Courses

I also run furniture making courses at the workshop. I am able to be flexible depending on your needs, ability and budget and can tailor course content and duration accordingly, courses can be from 1 week to a year.

Training with me in a professional environment will give you real exposure to quality which is essential for setting your own standards high.

I have a wide ranging furniture making skill set to share, demonstrated by the variety of pieces shown on this website.

Please see below for testimonials from former students.

Location

The workshop is situated five miles from the sea in the market town of Axminster in East Devon. It is five minutes walk from the train station with direct lines to London Waterloo. The station is opposite the main Axminster Power Tools shop, arguably the best tool shop in the country.

As a budding furniture maker with very little experience I signed up to Keith's  'Introduction to Furniture Making' course in order to gain the knowledge and skill needed to begin a career as a furniture maker.

Over the very enjoyable six month course Keith patiently taught me the fundamentals of furniture making from flattening and sharpening hand tools to the nuances of cutting dovetails and a lot lot more. His well structured course allowed me to build a solid foundation in using hand tools, workshop machinery, timber selection and jointing techniques, to name a few, by progressively making more complex pieces as the course and my skills developed. These included a chopping board, a mitred dovetailed jewellery box and a solid beech work bench that I will hopefully be making furniture on for many years to come.

As Keith was making furniture himself as well as teaching the course, I was also exposed to the methods and techniques he uses to produce pieces to the highest possible standard which was hugely beneficial to my development.

The six months I spent with Keith and Alfie were absolutely brilliant, it was so enjoyable I stayed on and worked for him for a further year and a half! Keith is an excellent teacher, always happy to answer any questions I had and give up his own time to help me out. I would highly recommend the course to anyone who is looking to begin a career in furniture making or who would just like to learn a new skill. I have since gone on to work for Artichoke- a leading high end furniture maker in the UK, which would not have been possible without learning from Keith.
